Medical Writing and Regulatory Affairs: Exploring the Two Branches

![Medical-Writing-and-Regulatory-Writing-Exploring-the-Two-Branches](https://blog.amwa.org/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/Medical-Writing-and-Regulatory-Writing-Exploring-the-Two-Branches.jpg?width=400&height=267&name=Medical-Writing-and-Regulatory-Writing-Exploring-the-Two-Branches.jpg)Regulatory writing and regulatory affairs are two key branches of the regulatory ecosystem with some similarities and some differences in audiences, focus, and responsibilities.

Medical communicators are involved in many aspects of the regulatory system.

What roles do medical communicators play in regulatory medical writing? How are those roles similar or different from those of regulatory affairs personnel?

## Regulatory Medical Writing

[Medical writing is a broad term](https://info.amwa.org/ultimate-guide-to-becoming-a-medical-writer)that encompasses a number of freelance and professional positions that involve shepherding, writing, and preparing print or digital documents that relate to science or health care.

Medical writers communicate about research findings, products, devices, and health care services with various audiences, from professional scientists to patients and families.

[This Syner-G BioPharma Group article](https://synergbiopharma.com/medical-writing-vs-regulatory-affairs/) lists the following key responsibilities of a medical writer:

- Clinical trial documents: protocols, informed consent forms, study reports, and summary documents for regulators
- Scientific papers, abstracts, and posters
- Patient education materials for educating patients on diseases, treatments, and health

[Regulatory medical writers](https://info.amwa.org/a-medical-communicators-guide-to-regulatory-writing) are key personnel in creating a number of[health care and medical documents](https://synergbiopharma.com/medical-writing-vs-regulatory-affairs/), including marketing applications, Investigational New Drug applications, Clinical Study Reports, and clinical and nonclinical pharmacology summaries.

## Regulatory Affairs

Regulatory affairs is a [related field](https://synergbiopharma.com/medical-writing-vs-regulatory-affairs/) that focuses on the process of developing, testing, gaining approval for, and monitoring pharmaceutical products, including drugs and devices. Regulatory affairs personnel manage the documentation required by regulatory agencies that monitor products for safety and effectiveness, such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

They also serve as a bridge between agencies and pharmaceutical companies.

## What These Specialties Share

Although the specific duties vary, medical writers and regulatory affairs professionals are both part of the pipeline that brings new drugs and devices safely to market. They are part of an ecosystem with checks and balances designed to make sure that patients’ health and safety are protected.

Broadly speaking, medical writers craft the narrative by compiling and shepherding the research findings and submissions that are necessary along the drug approval pipeline. Regulatory affairs professionals oversee the process, making sure that documents meet the standards set by regulators.

All of these professionals help to ensure that safe and efficacious products are brought to the pharmaceutical market.

## How They Differ

Medical writers create the documents such as CSRs that are used to convey a product’s safety and effectiveness. Medical writers write for a broad audience of both scientists and the general public. They are translators who are trusted with sharing information that can be critical for health and wellness.

Regulatory affairs professionals manage submissions and communicate with regulatory agencies as new products reach the market. Their role is often that of an intermediary between regulators and pharmaceutical entities.

The background and education required for these positions vary. Most medical writers have a foundation in life sciences along with excellent writing skills. Regulatory affairs professionals often pivot from careers in life sciences or pharmacy. They are strategic planners and project managers who possess a deep knowledge of regulations and regulators.

## An Integrated Approach

Regulatory medical writers and regulatory affairs professionals share significant responsibilities: to study and disseminate findings about the safety and efficacy of pharmaceutical products and to produce and refine the documents needed by regulators.

Continuing education is key to success in both areas. For example, as evolving technology, such as [artificial intelligence (AI)](https://blog.amwa.org/an-ethical-approach-to-harnessing-the-power-of-ai-for-medical-writing), becomes a part of the medical and health care field, medical writers and regulatory affairs personnel need to understand and learn how to incorporate it and use it ethically.

[Medical writers and regulatory affairs professionals can learn much](https://info.amwa.org/a-medical-communicators-guide-to-regulatory-writing) from understanding each others' responsibilities and goals. Both are key personnel in the regulatory environment that is critical for the health and well-being of society.
